Birthday Freebies in Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge: The Big List

This year I did a birthday freebie run around the region, and it turns out you can eat very well for free if you plan ahead. The golden rule: start signing up for rewards programs and downloading apps at least a month before your birthday. Some offers only need 7 days of lead time, but others need a full month, and several require you to make at least one purchase before your birthday to activate the offer.

A quick note on how this list works. Each entry tells you what you get, whether you need an app, an email sign-up, or nothing at all, and whether I could confirm the offer is currently running. Entries marked unconfirmed come from community lists and could not be verified online, so definitely call ahead before making a trip.

  1. Domino’s. Free medium 7-topping pizza. No sign-up needed. Walk in with photo ID showing your date of birth, on your actual birthday only, pickup only, at the location closest to your home. Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Paris, and New Hamburg locations. Confirmed as a local franchise offer, so call your location to be safe.
  1. Shakespeare’s Pies (Shakespeare, ON). Free pie on your birthday. In person, sign up for their free rewards card. The standout of my entire run. A local business with outstanding generosity, not to mention scrumptious pies.
  1. Jersey Mike’s. Free regular sub plus drink. Email sign-up required (Email Club), and you need to have purchased a regular sub in the past year. The offer arrives about a week before your birthday. Confirmed.
  1. Cobs Bread. Free cinnamon bun, valid for 14 days after your birthday, plus a free scone on your half birthday. App sign-up (COBS Club), or you can register in a browser. Confirmed.
  1. Lindt (550 King St N, Waterloo). Free bag of chocolates. Email sign-up. Easy peasy. Unconfirmed for the current year, so check your email offer before going.
  1. Fresh Burrito. Free burrito on your birthday. The birthday offer is reported to come through the app, so sign up early. Partially confirmed.
  1. Marble Slab Creamery. Free cone with an offer in the app. App sign-up (Marble Mail), at least 7 days before your birthday. Confirmed.
  1. Denny’s. Free Grand Slam breakfast. No sign-up, just show ID, and it has to be on your actual birthday. Confirmed.
  1. Giant Tiger. Free bag of chocolate-covered treats of your choice. Email or app sign-up. Unconfirmed for the current year.
  1. BarBurrito. Free churro on your birthday. App or email sign-up. Unconfirmed.
  1. Subway. Free cookie on your birthday through the app. Note that some current sources describe the MVP Rewards birthday offer as a free 6 inch sub with drink purchase instead, so check what lands in your app. Partially confirmed.
  1. Freshii. App sign-up. You get enough bonus points on your birthday to redeem a free bowl. Unconfirmed for the current year.
  1. Sephora. Free beauty gift during your birthday month. Free Beauty Insider account required. In-store, no purchase is needed; online it requires a 25-dollar minimum purchase. You pick from a few gift options. Confirmed.
  1. Checkout 51. App sign-up. I got 1 dollar back on any sweet treat as a birthday offer. Unconfirmed; offers vary.
  1. PC Optimum. App sign-up. I received 1000 points, worth a dollar, for a shopping trip within the offer window. Unconfirmed; offers vary by account.
  1. RW&Co. Email or app sign-up for their rewards program. They send a 15 dollar coupon code for regularly priced items. Unconfirmed for the current year.
  1. Mr. Sub. Free small Classics sub, valid within 30 days of your birthday. App or email sign-up (Mr. Sub Rewards). Confirmed.
  1. Tim Hortons. Free item on your birthday, usually a drink or breakfast sandwich. App sign-up (Tims Rewards) with your birthday entered at least 7 days ahead, plus at least one purchase in the previous 12 months. The offer is typically valid from 2 days before your birthday until the morning after. Confirmed as a program, but the app can glitch.
  1. Booster Juice. Free regular 710 mL smoothie from the Classics category. App sign-up (Booster Rewards) at least 7 days before your birthday with your birth date in your profile, and a qualifying purchase is reported to be required. Valid for 7 days. Confirmed as a program, same app glitch warning.
  1. Starbucks. One free handcrafted drink, food item, or bottled beverage. App sign-up (Starbucks Rewards) at least 7 days before your birthday, with at least one Star earning purchase beforehand. Under the program’s new membership levels, base level members must redeem on their actual birthday, while higher levels get 7 or 30 days. Confirmed.
  1. Harvey’s. Free pie on your birthday. Email sign-up (Burger Boss Club), which also gets you free Frings as a welcome gift. Some members report receiving a free burger offer through the app instead. Confirmed..
  1. New York Fries. Free regular fries on your birthday. App sign-up (Fry Society). Some sources report you need to join at least 48 hours ahead and have a minimum spend history, so sign up early and use it a few times first. Confirmed.
  1. Dairy Queen. Birthday offer through the app (DQ Rewards), commonly reported in Canada as buy one Blizzard get one free, though offers vary by location. You must complete at least one order of a dollar or more in the 45 days before your birthday while signed in. The offer appears in the Deals tab and is valid for a few days. Confirmed.
  1. Chatime. Free birthday drink. App sign-up, and the offer loads about 7 days before your birthday. You must make at least one purchase to activate your account first. Confirmed.
  1. Menchie’s. 5 dollars of birthday money. App sign-up (mySmileage). Valid from one week before to one week after your birthday, single transaction. Confirmed.
  1. Qdoba. Free chips and queso as the standard rewards tier birthday gift, with a free entree at the higher tier. App or email sign-up. Reported but unconfirmed for Canadian locations, so check your app.
  1. The Mandarin. Free birthday buffet when you dine in with 3 adults paying regular buffet price, valid one week before to one week after your birthday, on one bill, with photo ID. Email sign-up (The Mandarin Dish newsletter) at least one day before your birthday, though two weeks ahead is safer. Confirmed.
  1. The Works. Free birthday burger coupon. Email sign-up (Burgers with Benefits) at least 9 days before your birthday. Some sources describe it as a two-for-one burger, so read your coupon. Confirmed.
  1. The Keg. Free Billy Miner Pie. No sign-up, just mention your birthday to your server when dining in on your birthday. Confirmed.
  1. Boston Pizza. Free dessert during your birthday month. App or email sign-up (MyBP). Confirmed.
