Afternoon tea in Erin, at Maddie Hatter’s

Looking for afternoon tea in SW Ontario? High tea, or afternoon tea, in Erin comes with a whimsical twist at Maddie Hatter’s, where themed tables and playful presentation are drawing crowds beyond the usual weekend rush. The shop carves out a niche with an experience rooted in local charm. Matthew, Brenna and I drove to Erin for a lazy Sunday afternoon tea, and we just loved this local gem!

Located in Erin, which is about midway between the western side of Brampton and Orangville, is a sleepy commuter town with plenty of small town charm. And Maddie Hatter’s is a hard-to-miss gem perched right on the main drag.

What to expect at Maddie Hatter’s

Maddie Hatter Tea Shop offers a space that blends charm and calm. Inside, cozy seating makes it a welcoming spot for intimate gatherings and small groups. Beyond its rotating selection of loose-leaf teas, the menu includes light options such as salads and sandwiches for those skipping the full afternoon tea.

Reservations are recommended, and we enjoyed a relaxed meal in a space that felt more like a storybook than a cafe. The setting is flexible enough to suit different tastes and dietary needs. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available by request with advance notice, all without losing the shop’s whimsical charm.

What makes the tea service special

The tea service at Maddie Hatter’s focuses on quality and detail. Each pot of loose-leaf tea is steeped to order and served alongside a variety of food options. Ordering tea comes with your own pot of tea, plus a 3-tiered serving tray loaded with goodies. The sandwich selection rotates and often features a house-made creation that the server can describe when ordering. Dessert offerings round out the experience, with fresh cakes, homemade tarts, fresh macarons and more. Everything arrives on floral china and classic three-tiered trays. Presentation plays a big role here, encouraging guests to slow down and take in the full experience.

For our meal, we had egg salad, an open-faced cucumber sandwich, a mini chicken salad sandwich and a crostini with cream cheese and red pepper jelly.

The scones were light and fluffy and served with clotted cream, butter and jam, and the desserts were varied and tasty. My favorites were the macarons, but that’s often the case.

For dessert, we nibbled on cake pops, macarons, cupcakes, cookies, and a cheesecake square.

Rotating offerings worth noting

Maddie Hatter’s keeps its regulars coming back with creative seasonal events. Themed teas, including the Mother’s Day Tea and Holiday High Tea, are popular highlights and often require advance booking. Guests can also browse in-store gift boxes, curated tea sets or sign up for tea tastings and workshops when available. These added offerings help extend the experience beyond the table and keep visitors engaged year-round.
