Donegal Town: One of My Favorite Irish Towns

Donegal Town surprised me the first time I visited. It’s small enough to walk through in half a day, yet packed with history, great food, and scenery that keeps you outdoors longer than planned. Sitting right at the mouth of Donegal Bay, this is where the Wild Atlantic Way begins, and it’s a town that quickly earns a top spot on any Ireland itinerary.

Walk a few blocks from the bay, and Donegal Town starts to reveal its layers of history and craft. Here’s where handwoven fabrics, family-run restaurants, and centuries-old hotels keep the town’s story alive in everyday ways. We visited in May, and it quickly became one of my favorite spots in Ireland.

Reach Donegal Without the Rush

Donegal Town sits in the southern corner of County Donegal, part of Ulster but within the Republic of Ireland. It’s easy to reach, easy to explore, and hard to leave once you’ve settled in. The town is compact, which means you can explore most of the highlights without ever needing a car. Cafes, pubs, and boutiques are all within a short walk, which makes it perfect for a relaxed weekend stay.

If you’re driving from Dublin, expect a roughly three-hour trip through rolling farmland and quiet villages. Bus Éireann’s Route 30 runs directly from Dublin to Donegal Town for those traveling without a car. I’d recommend making the drive at least once, though, because the scenery makes every mile worth it.

A Walk Through Irish History

Donegal is steeped in history, with landmarks that tell stories of clans, faith, and endurance. Everywhere you look, there’s a reminder of the town’s layered past, from castle towers to riverside ruins.

Explore Donegal Castle’s Legacy

Donegal Castle

Right in the heart of town, Donegal Castle is a reminder of Ireland’s Gaelic roots. Built by the O’Donnell clan in the 1400s, it once served as both fortress and family home. Walking through its restored rooms, you can imagine the banquets that once filled its great hall, complete with the grand fireplace and carved oak staircase. Climb to the top of the tower, and you’ll get sweeping views of the River Eske and the rooftops of Donegal.

The Quiet Ruins of Donegal Abbey

A short walk away, the ruins of Donegal Abbey sit quietly by the river. Founded in 1474 for Franciscan friars, it was once a thriving center of learning and faith. Even in ruin, it carries an undeniable presence with its moss-covered stones, carved tombs, and peaceful views over the water. I found it to be one of the most serene places in town, the kind of spot where time seems to pause.

A Day Out on the Water

The town’s connection to the sea is best experienced aboard the Donegal Bay Waterbus. The 80-foot vessel was built in nearby Killybegs and fits up to 160 passengers, offering a comfortable and fun way to see the bay. The crew brings real personality to the trip, mixing history with stories and lighthearted humor that keeps the ride engaging.

As you cruise across the water, keep an eye out for the colony of seals that often sun themselves on Seal Island. You might also spot seabirds gliding overhead or small fishing boats heading out for the day. Onboard, there’s a bar, air-conditioned lounges, and full accessibility, so you can settle in and simply enjoy the ride.

Food and Finds Around Town

The food scene in Donegal Town strikes a perfect balance between tradition and creativity. Whether you’re after fresh seafood, pub classics, or a cozy meal with a view, there’s plenty to love here.

Good Food Meets Views

Castle Bar

My favorite place to start is the Olde Castle Bar & Red Hugh’s Restaurant, a local favorite tucked inside a restored stone building overlooking the ruins of O’Donnell Castle. Downstairs, the bar serves hearty dishes like lamb stew and seafood chowder, while upstairs at Red Hugh’s, you’ll find an à la carte menu that highlights local ingredients. It’s relaxed, warm, and full of Donegal flavor.

If you prefer something lighter and more modern, Quay West offers one of the best dining views in town, with wide windows that open up to Donegal Bay. The restaurant’s bright, coastal feel matches its menu of fresh, sustainable dishes, led by award-winning chef-owners Jo Roarty and Debbie O’Reilly. It’s one of the best spots in town for seafood and a good drink.

Shopping local in Donegal

Donegal’s long history of textile making lives on through its shops. Magee 1866, a fifth-generation family business, has been producing Donegal tweed since the 19th century. Inside, you’ll find tailored jackets, scarves, and throws made with the same craftsmanship the brand is known for.

Just a short walk away from the town center, Hanna Hats has been creating its famous tweed headwear since 1924. Each hat is still handmade using locally woven fabrics, keeping alive one of Donegal’s most enduring traditions. If you’re bringing something home, this is a meaningful and well-made choice.

Stays With Quiet Luxury

For a luxury stay that ties in history and nature, Lough Eske Castle Hotel sits just outside Donegal Town. The 19th-century Gothic Revival estate was fully restored in 2007 and offers guided tours, walking trails, and a full-service spa. The CARA Organic Spa includes thermal suites, outdoor hot tubs, and garden views for a quiet escape after a day of sightseeing.

Dinner at Cedars Restaurant makes the stay even better. The menu highlights Donegal lamb, Atlantic seafood, and vegetables grown in the region, served with views of the castle’s woodlands. It’s an elegant but easygoing experience that fits the relaxed atmosphere of Donegal perfectly.

The charm that keeps you coming back

Every part of Donegal Town feels within reach, yet there’s more to see than you’d expect. Between its historic landmarks, working craftspeople, and scenic bay, it captures the best of Ireland’s northwest in one easy stop. You’ll get genuine hospitality, rich history, and views that make every meal and walk feel special. Whether you’re stopping for a weekend or making it your base to explore farther north, Donegal Town is the kind of place that rewards every moment you spend there.
