Eataly at Sherway Gardens: A Local Foodie’s Haven

As a HUGE foodie, one of my favorite spots to eat, drink and browse in is Eataly at Sherway Gardens.  If you haven’t been there, you’re seriously missing out because it really is a foodie’s dream come true. It’s more than just another Italian market; it’s an experience, and one that you should check out for yourself.

A Taste of Italy in Toronto

Let’s start with the atmosphere. Eataly has this amazing way of making you feel like you’re in the heart of Italy. The decor is warm and inviting, and the staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. It’s the perfect place to spend a leisurely afternoon browsing, eating, or just hanging out.

The Market

Now, let’s talk about the market. It’s like a candy store for grown-ups. Fresh pasta, artisanal bread, a cheese counter that would make any fromage fanatic swoon — I mean, it’s basically heaven. You can find all sorts of Italian goodies here, from the familiar to the downright intriguing. And the produce? Don’t even get me started. It’s the kind of stuff that makes you want to quit your day job and become a full-time chef.

One of the standout features is the cheese counter. It’s a treasure trove of Italian cheeses, from creamy mozzarella to sharp-aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. If you’re not sure which cheese to choose, the staff always offer recommendations and share their expertise.

Pro tip: Look for their in-house made burrata. It’s amazing, and I’ve tried a LOT of burrata!

The Restaurant

After browsing the market, you might be ready for a bite to eat. Eataly isn’t just about shopping; it’s about eating, too. Their sit-down restaurant is a must-try. I mean, where else can you get authentic Italian cuisine in such a stylish, cosmopolitan setting right after browsing the market? The menu changes with the seasons, but you can always expect fresh, flavorful dishes made with the best ingredients.

When we were last there, we tried the summer burrata and tomato salad special, the tagliatelle alla Bolognese, a lovely pasta dish made with saffron pasta and pork sausage sauce, and my daughter feasted on a Caprese pizza.

Pro tip: They give you LOTS of menus loaded with choices, but not all the food will come out altogether. If you have kids, ask them to put the kids’ orders in first so that they come out the fastest.

Gelato Counter

For a sweet treat that’s hard to resist, head to the gelato counter. The rich, creamy textures and bold flavors make it a standout. My top pick? The lemon gelato — it’s a refreshing burst of citrus that’s perfect for a sunny day. Whether you’re a fan of classic flavors or something more adventurous, this counter has you covered.

Bakery Counter

Next up is the bakery counter, a paradise for pastry lovers. Here, you’ll find a range of freshly baked goods, from crusty breads to decadent pastries. The cannoli are a must-try — their crispy shells filled with creamy, sweet ricotta are simply irresistible. I just LOVe the chocolate cannoli – creamy filling studded with dark chocolate – delish! It’s the perfect stop to satisfy your sweet tooth or pick up a treat to enjoy later.

Pro tip: You can get a multipack of mini desserts, but don’t shop hungry or you’ll end up spending more than you may have planned!

Craving a slice of pizza? The pizza counter serves up artisanal pies with a variety of toppings. Each pizza is crafted with care, using high-quality ingredients to create a deliciously crispy crust and flavorful toppings. It’s a great spot for a quick, satisfying meal without the need for a full sit-down experience.

Cafe Counter

For those who need a coffee fix or a quick snack, the cafe counter is the place to go. From espresso to cappuccino, they offer a range of expertly brewed coffee drinks. Pair your coffee with one of their delectable desserts like cakes, pasticcini, and cornetti. It’s a casual, cozy spot to relax and refuel during your visit.

Cooking Classes

The classes cover a range of topics, from pasta making to pizza baking. One popular option is the pasta class, where you’ll learn how to make fresh pasta from scratch. It’s a fun, interactive experience where you get to knead, roll, and shape your pasta under the guidance of expert chefs. The best part? You get to enjoy the fruits of your labor at the end of the class!

A Few Other Eataly Spots

While Sherway Gardens is a fantastic location, it’s worth noting that Eataly has several other locations across North America. Each one has its own unique flair, but they all share the same commitment to quality and authenticity. The Eataly in New York, for instance, is known for its extensive selection of wines and has a particularly impressive beer garden rooftop. Meanwhile, Eataly Toronto‘s downtown location offers a slightly different vibe with its own range of restaurants and markets.
