Why Forest City?

London is often called the “Forest City” because of the city’s abundance of trees, parks, and green spaces. The city has more than 4 million trees, providing many benefits such as improved air quality, shade, and habitats for wildlife. The nickname emphasizes the city’s efforts in preserving and enhancing its natural landscape, creating a lush and green urban environment. It shows how dedicated London is to maintaining a balance between urban development and the preservation of nature.

London’s History

London’s history dates back to 1793 when Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe, a British Army General, chose the site along the Thames River as the future capital of Upper Canada. In 1826, the city was officially founded and developed into an important transportation hub due to its strategic location beside the Thames River. The river served as a vital waterway for trading and transportation.

The city’s name, London, was chosen to honor the British capital and to reflect the strong ties between Canada and the United Kingdom. Over the years, London evolved from a small colonial outpost into an important urban center that plays a significant role in Canada’s economic and cultural development.

Today, traces of London’s history can be seen in its architecture, with many well-preserved historical buildings spread all over the city. A notable historical site is Eldon House, a Georgian-style mansion built in 1834. It’s a heritage home that provides visitors with a glimpse of what life was like back in the early 19th century.
