The Black Badger: A Tudor-Style Pub Keeps Cambridge Coming Back For More

Matthew and I stopped into Black Badger British Pub for lunch on a Saturday, and it was already in full swing. A soccer match played on the big screen, tables were filled with locals, and the room had that easy weekend buzz that tells you a place doesn’t rely on novelty to draw a crowd.

The exterior sets expectations immediately. Tudor-style lines, dark trim, and a look that feels intentionally old-world rather than decorative. Step inside and the pub commits fully to that style. Dark wood beams run overhead, white walls keep it from feeling heavy, and the lighting stays low enough to feel cozy without being dim. Seating is a mix of bar stools, booths, and standard tables, which makes it flexible whether you’re there solo, as a couple, or with a group.

Parking and logistics that matter

This is an easy stop, which always counts. There’s parking directly behind the pub, plus plenty of street parking across the road. Parking in the lot across the road is free on the weekends.

There’s also a large patio that clearly sees a lot of use in warmer months. It was closed for winter during our visit, but the size alone makes it obvious why this spot stays busy once patio season returns.

A menu built around pub standards

The menu sticks close to what people expect from a British pub. English pub classics anchor the lineup, supported by familiar casual dishes that suit a long lunch or a game-day stop. Fish and chips, bangers and mash, soups, sandwiches, and hearty plates all make sense here.

I started with the French onion soup, because I always do when it’s on a menu. This one delivered. Deeply savory, properly onion-forward, and finished the way a French onion soup should be with lots of cheese and the bread was still a bit crispy, which was a pleasant surprise. The soup wasn’t overly salty, which is often the case with French onion soup.

For my main, I ordered the Roast Beef Stuffed Yorkshire Pudding. It’s a classic pub dish done exactly as advertised. Tender roast beef tucked inside a Yorkshire pudding, with a substantial layer of mashed potato in there, too. The gravy was rich and dark and plenty beefy. It was a carb lover’s delight!

Matthew went with the Beef Dip Sandwich with fries. Straightforward, generous, and built for dipping without falling apart halfway through. The fries came out hot and crisp; cold fries is a personal pet peeve.

Final notes

I sought out Black Badger Pub because I was craving authentic British food, and this homey spot delivered. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the prices were surprisingly affordable. We didn’t order any alcohol, as it was lunch time, but beer prices seemed equally reasonable.

We did see a card on the table promoting trivia on Wednesday nights, so if you’re in the area, stop by!
